Q: Why did you choose to do floristry as a career?

A: I originally applied for a job at a wedding florist. I didn’t get it, but the practical interviewing process encouraged me to think about floristry. Prior to this I didn’t have any big ideas about what I wanted to do outside of my job at the time at a charity shop. All I knew is that I wanted to be creative, and floristry provides just that!

Q: What do your family and friends think?

A: They encouraged me wholeheartedly, they said they could picture me being a florist. This helped dim any anxieties I had about beginning my college course to get my start in the industry.

Q: What’s the best bit about your chosen career?

A: Being able to work with nature and harness my creativity. The fact flowers are so meaningful to people is an added extra and makes the job very rewarding.

Q:  Have you any regrets?

A: My first experience of two peak periods in one month was very challenging. However, this experience has made me more prepared for other stressful periods. Having a good team around me meant I had the support I needed to push through and reap the benefits of all our hard work.

Q:  Where do you hope to be in the future?

A: Currently I’m working at a florists, and I’m very content with this as I am so new to floristry. Learning from more experienced florists is invaluable. But I know that if I ever wished to, I could go down many different avenues with floristry.

Q:  What advice would you give to anyone thinking about taking up floristry?

A: Give it a go! The worst thing that can happen is that it isn’t for you. The best thing that can happen is that you find something you love to do and can earn a living from it!

Q: What would you like to tell the world about floristry?

As a whole, I think it’s a great industry as it’s based on the act of gift giving and celebration. There are flowers for any occasion, happy or sad. They are an expression of how people feel and to be able to have a part to play in that as a florist is really special.  400
