Why did you decide to be a florist?
I had a gut feeling it was what I wanted to do! I was 15, preparing for school exams, and thinking “I’d love to have a Florist one day”; I researched the industry and fell in love with the idea of Weddings & Events, and being able to work with a variety of materials throughout different seasons. I love the inspiration that flowers and gardens can bring throughout interior design, or art in general.
How did you start
I went to college. Most of my training was at an agricultural college in Surrey but as my competitive career took off, I went onto Moreton Morrell where I was tutored by Jane Benefield and Laura Leong. My career developed as I began working on event installations in London which was followed by competing within the International WorldSkills competitions.
What’s the best part of your job?
That’s got to be working with such a variety of beautiful materials that are grown by such passionate growers and sharing the love of floristry & designing with clients or students. I love wedding and events, and being able to work with gorgeous flowers is always fab, but equally I love competitive Floristry and being able to create a big structure with striking, yet exciting, material!
Winning a coveted Gold Medal at RHS Chelsea Flower Show and title of Best in Show, along with RHS Young Chelsea Florist of the Year 2019 is something I’m very proud of and being the UK’s representative at the Interflora World Cup in 2023 was just incredible. Now I am off to the Singapore Garden Festival … none of those were in my mind 12 years ago!
What’s the worst part?
I’m fortunate enough to be working in an industry that I love, and although it’s a lot of work with social media, accounts, admin etc., there aren’t too many downsides. However, cleaning dirty vases wouldn’t be my go-to job!
Why do you think National Florist Day is important/a good idea
As a proud ambassador of National Florist Day, I am honoured to share the beauty and passion that professional floristry embodies. It’s a great way to come together to recognise the artistry and craftsmanship that enriches lives through the power of flowers.
What would you say to another florist about getting involved in NFD
It provides an invaluable opportunity for florists to unite and showcase the artistry, creativity, and expertise that define our industry. It’s a chance to celebrate our shared passion for flowers, connect with fellow professionals, and raise awareness about the importance of floristry in enriching lives and uplifting communities. By joining in, florists can amplify their presence, attract new customers, and contribute to the recognition and appreciation of our craft.
Why should someone consider a career in floristry?
I think Floristry is great because you get to immerse yourself in a world of creativity, artistry, and heartfelt connections, whether it’s a birthday, wedding, celebrating the arrival of a new baby, or a funeral. You’re constantly learning, evolving, and finding new ways to adapt to trends etc. Embarking on a career in floristry opens up a world of exciting opportunities beyond just arranging flowers. It’s not just about the glitz and glamour; it’s about the personal growth and fulfilment that comes from embracing these challenges and opportunities.
