Why did you decide to be a florist?
I needed a job when I was 14 and walked into the only florist I knew in my hometown of Guildford and asked for a job and that’s where the journey began. Who knew 20 years later I would be where I am today.
How did you start?
What a career I’ve had! I started at the age of 14 working as a Saturday boy in a small boutique shop, I learned the old school way of washing buckets, watering plants and conditioning flowers for hours on end, but whilst doing so I was watching everything and asking a million questions.
As time progressed, I was allowed to make bouquets and contract arrangements under the watchful eye of my very particular boss She taught me everything I know, and I certainly wouldn’t have come this far without all that knowledge that she shared with me.
I went to college and studied levels 2,3 and 4 whilst also working at every given opportunity. Part way through college I changed shops and in the end was running the business for several years.
I then applied for a job at The Dorchester starting as Florist Team Leader, then Assistant Manager and finally Designer Florist a position I’ve held for the last 12 years, and which has completely flown by.
My role includes creative direction for three hotels, in the UK and Dubai, along with leading the team creating beautiful arrangements for the public areas of the hotels, Weddings, Events and private parties, along with the day-to-day operations of our retail operation – Cake & Flowers – which has just had its 1st Birthday!
What’s the best part of your job?
There are so many amazing aspects to my role as it can be so varied, I would say it has to be having creative freedom and working with only the best flowers from the best growers.
What’s the worst part?
It would have to be the constant changes and constantly having to think on your feet, but that’s what every florist does best!
Why do you think National Florist Day is important?
I think it’s the most brilliant idea to champion our wonderful industry and show the general public how amazing we are!
What would you say to another florist thinking about getting involved?
I would say you absolutely have to! We are all in this together and need to support each other in any way that we can. We should celebrate what amazing professionals we are and how we a such a big part of people’s lives.
Why should someone consider a career in floristry?
Floristry is the most rewarding job anyone could ask for, being part of peoples most special moments is what makes all the hard work worth it.
